Hooker Valley – Mt Cook

A trip in the middle of Winter after it snowed, produced some spectacular scenery. Photographs don’t do it justice! Let me tell you what it felt like…

Starting the walk it was -6C. Imagine the silence. As you walk you hear your breathing, and the crunch of snow under feet. As you walk for a few hours you get to feel how thin the air is, especially being a sea level dweller! Feel the cold. Standing still on the track deep in the valley, the silence is amazing. No wind that day, no cloud. Brilliant sun. Then you hear a cracking sound and sometimes a rumble – the ice is beginning to melt and break up, tumbling down the mountain side. Maybe taking some boulders with it. And the light, it is different in the thinner atmosphere than at sea level.
